When Karl Marx set out to interpret the structures of the societies of the day (the mid- to late-1800's), his philosophical system claimed that structures of a capitalist society inevitably lead to conflict between the ruling class (the bourgeoisie) and the working class (the proletariat). Eventually, the working class, as the more numerous class in society, would unite to overthrow the ruling class and establish a new system, a transition from capitalism to socialism and then from socialism to communism.
