I can't help but wonder if my proximity to Canada is why everyone around here thinks Spanish(Mexican) rice is supposed to have ground beef in it.

I'm Mexican and can confirm, there is no meat in Spanish Rice. I mean you can add it if you want, but traditionally, there is no meat in Spanish Rice.
