Why Has America Been So Anti-Communist?

Russia, China, Vietnam - it seems like so many foreign conflicts of the past have been to stop communism, but could it also have been to maintain foreign influence? What threat does communism pose to the US?

Historically it was called the Cold War. The US, and the Western World would not have survived the Stalin-Mao ear, had it not been for the Western Alliance built by the US. Western/Northern Europe, even extreme socialist countries felt safe with that arrangement.

Both China and the USSR/Eastern Europe suffered tremendously under the Stalin/Mao regimes.

Today, there is no communism to speak of, with a few minor non-expansionist exceptions.

@Northwest Ahh okay. You know your stuff! :) Is it that there is no "pure" communism in existence today? And were the Stalin/Mao regimes explicitly communist regimes or were they some blend of ideologies calling itself "communist"?

You asked about our historical communism related conflicted and my answer was limited to that.

Both Stalin and Mao used the umbrella of Communism, and that's all that matters. They were also militant in spreading it.

Today, it does not really matter if there are pure communist regimes out there. What matters is that none of them is expanding. The only sort of exception is South Korea, which is in conflict with South Korea, an ally of ours, so out engagement there is not about communism per se.
