I Am Interested In Ww1 and Ww2

Today is the 75th anniversary of the battle of Iwo Jima

Threescore and fifteen years ago,

On Iwo Jima's scoriac stones

Many a young man bled and died

For country, God or emperor.

Now looking at this desolate isle

Today, but little more remains

Than mostly unkempt monuments

And dreadful artifacts of war,

Rusting where they fell, so long ago.

@olderCanuck

So did I, and on both sides.

I also had one in the American Civil War, who immigrated to the US from Germany just in time to be drafted into the Union Army's 11th Corps. They took terrible beatings at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.

@Thinkerbell mine where with the Canadian Div ,, attached to the British army ,, inthe first and second ,,, also had some come from New Hampshire during the war of 1812 ,,
seems we both have relatives willing to fight for their country ,, and Freedom ,,,

My WW2 German relative had no choice; he was drafted, and was extremely lucky to survive. He was at Stalingrad, but caught typhoid fever and was flown out while it was still possible. He later was sent back to the eastern front, and he told a story about how SS troops were positioned behind the regular Wehrmacht soldiers, to make sure they didn't retreat without orders. The regular soldiers at the front said, "Der Feind ist hinter uns." The enemy is to our rear.

@Thinkerbell My understanding is that Hitler borrowed that idea from Stalin’s NVKD “anti retreat” units who killed thousands of regular Red Army troops.

Yes, and I think Khrushchev was a political commissar in charge of one of these "anti-retreat" units.

@Thinkerbell Did he bang his shoe on Red Army privates?

I think some of them got worse than the podium did at the UN.

@Thinkerbell I was under that impression, as well.
