So its memorial day so I can't help thinking about my dad

He was a combat infantry man in the 157st regiment / 45th infantry division.

Front line soldier during WW II

Kindest most gentle man I ever knew in the years I knew him but .......

He had a bronze stare and a combat infantrymen's badge that meant he had been in actual combat against Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.

He brought home a German's officer pistol that ... well ... most likely because he was just a private 1st class he got because ...well ...yeah

I guess what I mean to say is that he was tough when he had to be and kind when he could be and if I was ever half the man he was I could be proud.

The 157th Infantry Regiment is a historically distinguished unit that fought as part of the 45th Infantry Division (the "Thunderbirds") during World War II. Originally a Colorado National Guard unit, the 157th served over 500 days of intense frontline combat, participating in the invasions of Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, Southern France, and Germany.

Invasion & Italian Campaign: Fought through Sicily and the brutal landings at Salerno. Their heroic defensive stand at the Anzio Beachhead in early 1944 is famously chronicled.

Southern France to Germany: Landed on the French Riviera in August 1944, pushing through the Vosges Mountains and into Alsace.

The Battle of Reipertswiller: In January 1945, the regiment’s 3rd Battalion was famously surrounded and nearly decimated in the freezing hills of France during Operation Nordwind.

Liberation of Dachau: The 157th Infantry played a primary role in liberating the Dachau concentration camp in April 1945.

Medal of Honor: Multiple soldiers from the 157th were awarded the Medal of Honor for valor, including Second Lieutenant Van T. Barfoot and Corporal Edward G. Wilkin
