Doesn't this rare earths deal with Ukraine make the US more reliant on Russia?
Right now the US is heavily reliant on China for rare earths for its defence and AI sector.
This deal will see the US invest in infrastructure in Ukraine to extract rare earths, except most of the metals are in the areas taken by Russia, not in Ukraine.
That means the US will become dependent on China and Russia for rare earths, making it even less likely it can find a third source elsewhere if China and Russia co-ordinate an embargo, meanwhile the US is paying for critical infrastructure right on Russia's doorstep, with no plans for US defence personnel to be at the scene.
The whole thing looks shaky and likely to end up in Russian hands
