It seems to me that what Putin is aiming for is not to capture Ukraine but make it a non-functional state, while also steering his own country

towards nationalistic sacrifice and readiness for all-out war. Basically if he can convince the Russian people to tolerate seeing towns and cities get razed in the name of national survival and not rise in protest when there are breadlines and rations, he avoids a personal coup
