So why did the Japanese not give up earlier snd save all this carnage?

@peterlee i assume that is a rhetoric question.

@samueltyler2 There were three possible solutions. None were acceptable,
Firstly, Japan surrendered early. It simply could not happen, Cultural reasons.
Secondly, the carnage that happened.
Thirdly, no bomb. The war continues for another two years. The slaughter of Japanese civilians, soldiers, American soldiers, British soldiers.
Another rhetorical question. Would Russia have taken more of Europe then?

@peterlee not sure what you think your point is, but please stop. We are memorializing an even that cost hundreds of thousands of human lives. This should never happen again. We need to find a way to avoid all wars.

@samueltyler2 And my father fought on the beaches of Japan, witnessing the carnage around him.

@peterlee We have to thank him, but i still don't see your point here. Do you want future wars, and if they occur would you want nuclear weapons to be used?

@peterlee Why did Japan attack the US in the first place ? This is something I’ve never understood.

@bijouxbroussard https://www.historyskills.com/classroom/year-10/year-10-pearl-harbor-reading/ I wondered the same thing.

@bijouxbroussard I gather that it had something to do with the USA stopping oil sales to Japan because of Japan waging war in China. Japan decided to just take the oil in the Dutch East Indies and needed the US navy out of the way. Big mistake.
Some cynical people suggest that FDR deliberately made it attractive for Japan to do that because he needed public support to enter WW2? Hitler conveniently declared war on the US a couple of days later.
