Never understood the impulse to spend one’s energy defending those already in positions of power

Especially in the noisy space of the internet. I know people who hold political office personally, yet even when others criticize them in my presence even harshly, I do not rush to their defense. They are in position of power. They don't need me to create balance.

To assume authority is to accept scrutiny, it is inevitable and to hold power is to inevitably stir anger. No current system is perfect enough to hold any type of power without causing some degree of harm or suffering. And those who suffer speaking up is no surprise.

I support the good achieved, but I refuse to elevate them to the status of untouchable idols even if I personally love them. My only boundary lies where criticism turns into direct threats to life or the dangerous promotion of islamism against them .. Because I worked here to push it away and wouldn't step back knowing what it costs.

Beyond that, I see no reason to shield the powerful from the very accountability they chose to carry. They can speak for themselves. I don't lend my voice to someone who is at the top of the hierarchy no matter who they are.

The impulse is to defend their beliefs and mental associations with that person.

Nonetheless everything you just wrote is true and I respect you for saying it.
it's true. I'll say what I believe but I don't feel the need to rush to their aid.

There's a weird practice during political debates where someone will attack a political figure as if it is some kind of gotchya. As if the flawed political figure invalidates an entire position. People fall for that and the discussion starts becoming a referendum on a person, but a debate about a position. And it's frequently done with exactly that intention.
