How fried chicken and watermelon became black stereotypes

Not exactly what the video is about but basically there's still sundown towns but when they were massive it was dangerous for black people to travel when seeing relatives. Whites would put glass in their food if they stopped at diners, they would drag them on the floor etc. and if a black person had money they could get food from these diners but were made to stand behind dumpsters, when the food was handed out, it was often tainted.

So black mothers started prepping meals that would last awhile across thousands of miles. Fried, cured foods and stuff.

The reason I mentioned watermelon which I don't know if it's in the video was because one of the posters said that watermelon had water and was rich in hydration so they needed that to get away from psycho whites often times. They didn't put it like that but kinda how I took it.

But these things become stereotypes without knowing the origins.

Anyways this video isn't really about that, it's about how black women outsmarted white diners but goes into specfic foods they choose to eat to evade past kkk people and sympathizers.

The title is also misleading. Nothing about outsmarting anyone, it just explained how black families managed to make food that kept from going bad, since they couldn't go to diners. I thought they were gonna talk about how, IDK, black women tricked white people into eating fried chicken out of a shoebox or something.

It seems like a lot of stereotypes come from some point where people had to get creative to survive. The stereotype about Irish people eating nothing but potatoes comes from how Ireland was left impoverished by colonization, so they had to depend on the food that was both easiest to grow, and highest in nutrition.

@BohoBabe I looked it up and potatoes are the one food you can survive long periods on. So yeah agreed but it's still sad to me. I think the title of the original video wasn't meaning literal. I think they were meaning something like the fact that black mothers found a way around society, in that sense they did outsmart the system.

Wow, that's really sad to watch. I'm not sure that's entirely how watermelon and fried chicken became racist tropes though.

@MoveAlong I had an idea in my head but then forgot when I wrote the title ha

@MoveAlong @SatanBurger I remember reading something about part of the reason watermelons became a stereotypical favorite food is that eating an entire watermelon is very selfish, so it was a good way to promote the idea that black people were selfish without making much effort.

Not mentioned was that chicken was the cheapest type of meat available to them. It still is the cheapest type of meat.

If any other type of meat would have been available, they could have made jerky out of it and lasted even longer. Jerky was a native American invention.

@DeWayfarer Pemmican especially if you put honey for carbs and dried fruit was brilliant 👏
