December 30th
The Battle of Wakefield occurred on December 30, 1460, during the Wars of the Roses, a series of dynastic conflicts between the rival houses of Lancaster and York vying for the English throne. The battle was fought near Wakefield in West Yorkshire, and it ended in a significant defeat for the Yorkists.
On December 30, 1813, during the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain, British forces carried out a devastating attack on Buffalo, New York. As part of a retaliatory campaign, British troops and their Native American allies crossed the Niagara River and set fire to the town. The burning of Buffalo was in response to the American destruction of the village of Newark (now Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario) earlier that month.
1879 The first performance of the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera, 'The Pirates of Penzance', at the Royal Bijou Theatre, Paignton, Devon.
1887 A petition, signed by more than 1 million women in Britain, was sent to Queen Victoria calling for public houses to be closed on Sundays.
1919 Lincoln's Inn, one of four 'Inns of Court' in London to which barristers belong and where they are called to the Bar, admitted its first female students.
1978 - Iron Maiden began their journey to heavy metal stardom with their first-ever recording session, held over New Year’s Eve weekend at a studio in Cambridge, England. The two-day session was secured at a discount rate, as most musicians avoided studio time during the holiday period. The band recorded a demo that would later become a pivotal moment in their career. Featuring early versions of tracks like "Prowler" and "Iron Maiden", the raw recordings captured the essence of the band’s unique sound—melding aggressive riffs, galloping rhythms, and powerful vocals
