Slavery no matter the culture in history, was never justified.

I do have some qualms, in this video, about the time periods involved referred to in Roman slavery.

Constantine wasn't until the 4th century CE. So for nearly a thousand years before that, slaves had no rights at all. Constantine was the first Christian ruler of Rome. And even biblically, in the old testament, slaves had certain rights.

What I find even worse though is slavery is still allowed today in the world. And this video makes no mention at all, of places like Bangladesh or the "human trafficking" (slavery) in India.

Like it doesn't exist.

Addressing the Complexities of Slavery in Rome Under Constantine

Your statement highlights several important points about the historical and contemporary realities of slavery, particularly in the context of Roman slavery and the reforms introduced by Constantine in the 4th century CE.

Historical Context of Roman Slavery

You are correct that slavery in ancient Rome was a brutal institution for nearly a thousand years, with slaves having very few rights until reforms began to emerge in the 4th century CE under Constantine. His reign marked a significant shift, but it was just one part of a long history of oppression.

Rights in the Old Testament:

The Old Testament does indeed outline certain rights for slaves, reflecting a different cultural context. However, these rights were often limited and did not equate to true freedom or equality.

Constantine's Reforms: Under Constantine, several laws were enacted that aimed to improve the conditions for slaves. He introduced legal protections, encouraged manumission, and recognized the importance of family rights among slaves.

These reforms were influenced by Christian teachings that emphasized the dignity of all human beings.

Contemporary Slavery and Human Trafficking

Your concern about modern slavery is valid and pressing. Despite the progress made over the centuries, slavery still exists today in various forms, including:

Human Trafficking: This is a significant issue in many countries, including Bangladesh and India, where individuals are often exploited for labor or sexual purposes. The lack of legal protections and socio-economic factors contribute to this ongoing crisis.

Global Awareness: It's troubling when educational materials, like the video you mentioned, fail to address contemporary issues of slavery and human trafficking.

This omission can perpetuate ignorance about the realities many people face today.

Your insights underscore the importance of recognizing both historical and modern forms of slavery. It’s essential to continue raising awareness about these issues and advocating for the rights of those who are still oppressed.

Slavery is still a problem and not just in non-Western countries.

It was, and is, a sufficiently serious problem in the UK that there have been new laws addressing the problem of Modern Slavery enacted fairly recently.

Well most of the Roman ones died, but then most of the African ones did as well.
@Captain True, but here’s the thing. My father’s still alive, and as a child he knew his grandfather (who was born enslaved). How many descendants of Roman slaves actually knew their ancestors personally ?

@bijouxbroussard It doesn't make the Roman way better though does it ? Victorians also ran work houses and sent little boys up chiumneys and down coal mines in the UK. I guess we have to be grateful they did run workhouses. With the homeless in this country maybe workhouses is not a bad idea, and many getting prisoners to do work while in prison is not a bad idea either. You may think that is incredibly right wing but its come up as a thought to me now I’ve started teacher training and we’ve looked at the 4 possible goals of education based on the 2 x 2 matrix social value x individual development value. Ideally both are worthwhile but my conclusion is while we still live in a competitive capitalist society we really need both to compete with China and India because they are so big and will eventually and inevitably win and the USA because as the UK did before, it is using economic colonialism and protectionism to maintain its place as top dog. The latter of those has been shown never to work and led directly to the first and second world wars, the former leads to exploitation. The only way to change the world would be to rid it of capitalism and have a single socialist government. Cant you do that for me Bijou, it would suit me at my age - but I think I am getting so much out of teacher training I would still want to carry on with it (classical conditioning). God bless and thank you for being argumentative aggresive, righteous motivated, thought provoking, always interesting you. Martin xxx

ps I fogot about little boys and men being pressed into military and merchant naval surface
