Captain Henry Wirz, commandant of the notrious Andersonville (Camp Sumter) prison of war camp was the only Confederate officer tried for war crimes. He was subsequently convicted and hanged.
It's unfortunate that Gen. Phil Sheridan wasn't named chair of a military tribunal that could have tried all the high ranking Confederate officers for treason.
He might have said something along the lines that the only good Confederate is a dead Confederate.
