This change was influenced by French etiquette, which discouraged public displays of affection—particularly kissing. The expression "tête-à-tête" (meaning "face to face, in private") reflects this era's emphasis on discretion, even though kissing under such large brims became awkward.Following a plague epidemic, social customs shifted again, with kisses replaced by handshakes and a respectful hat-off greeting.
