The USA took Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, and they're not giving them back - so why can't you folks let China have Taiwan?

It's actually Chinese, and you don't have that advantage in your captured countries.

When the US annexed Hawaii in the 1890s, American settlers had become the dominant force in the country and requested to be annexed by the US. Guam and Puerto Rico fell to the US by default because the US defeated Spain in a war over Spain‘s despotic rule in Cuba that had caused a genuine humanitarian crisis.
In all of these three cases, a tyrannical political system (Spanish colonial rule in Guam and Puerto Rico or the rule of the last Hawaiian Queen) were replaced by a liberal and republican system (the American system) with material improvements in the quality of life for the inhabitants of these three islands.

The exact opposite would be the case in Taiwan. A liberal, republican and democratic country would be violently subjugated by an authoritarian regime, in an unprovoked war of conquest.

@basilfawlty89 No, if I thought that the Armenians in NK had governed themselves democratically and in a liberal fashion then I would’ve advocated sending the Marine Corps to Stepanakert in order to deter Ilham Alijev from invading. And if I thought that Azerbaijan would do what Milosovic did in Kosovo or Bosnia then I would’ve advocated bombing Baku into submission.

@CedricH yet Azerbaijan literally did that to Armenians in the 90s. And I guess you don't see starvation of a civilian population as a form of terror or a human rights violation.

But again, even if Artsakh wasn't perfect, compare it with the Azerbaijani regime. Armenians were much more free.

@basilfawlty89 I think it would’ve been better if the US had enforced a settlement back in the 1990s which would’ve probably meant an Armenian-N-Karabakh unification. However, the US unfortunately didn’t intervene, in part because Washington didn’t care and in part because the South Caucasus was mistakenly treated like Russia‘s sphere of influence.

You know I'm just against imperial conquest as a point of ethics I don't actually care who does it.
CedricH · M
@CountScrofula Which is a great argument, but by making it you concede that the annexations of the three aforementioned islands were indeed imperial conquests, when, in fact, they weren’t.

@CedricH Would you want your homeland handed over to a foreign power after a war like a lost poker bet?

It sounds like Chairman Pooh Bear craves Formosan honey! And semiconductors.

@JoyfulSilence peace should definitely be our reality. But I appreciate the snub.

@Roundandroundwego

Does he pay you well to post here?
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@Roundandroundwego Taiwan (Formosa) was never under control by the mainland Chinese.
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@Roundandroundwego
doesn't change the fact that they're Chinese. Does it give the Americans an excuse to use military might there,? I assume you would not say things or know things that don't excuse more Western killing!

Have you heard about China towns in America? One day China will claim them as part of China.
@Diotrephes not coherent. Have you heard that you are completely discredited?

Who has completely discredited me?

Why don't we let the Taiwanese decide?
@basilfawlty89 I think the UN can be made to function - and to deny the USA hegemony.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@Roundandroundwego they need to remove the veto powers.
@basilfawlty89 obviously. And the general assembly needs to be able to vote with sticking power. It's old news, the international socialist movement had an earlier version and still waits for the simpering and vassal like ruling class in each nation to stop cow towing to the USA, NATO or whatever it's calling itself this time.

@Elessar you want to shut up all the anti colonization people? Why would we bother you at all, if you're still an invader by choice?
