and a town that has found itself as both part of Scotland and England during its long history
MandyMitchell · 80-89, F
@Dez580 Indeed so - and a recent survey of the people found the majority would prefer being Scotch to Englich.
Dez580 · 61-69, M
@MandyMitchell I am always careful about such surveys, it all depends on the question asked and how it is phrased. Of course Berwick's history goes back to when it was the Roman Empire's most northerly town and garrison and ebven before that,
MandyMitchell · 80-89, F
@Dez580 Poor Berwick was stuck well north of Hadrian's wall, and well south of Antonines, and guarded the Merse and the Tweed. It was vulnerable to attack from everybody. It should be Scottish of course, but we stole it as we grabbed so much in our greed.

@MandyMitchell rewriting history? Berwick's history is much more complicated than that
MandyMitchell · 80-89, F
@Dez580 every town's history is more complicated than two lines. One can only state the pertinent facts in such a short summary.
Dez580 · 61-69, M
@MandyMitchell and do not forget the Norsemen and Danes,
MandyMitchell · 80-89, F
@Dez580 Or the Reivers and mercenaries. So much history in this stolen little town.
