Any good World War 2 movie based on true facts?

Theme has to be how the world War and not any side story. Documentary will work too.
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
Just talking about movies... not documentaries. I would add these titles into the conversation:

Der Untergang (2004) is largely based on the memories of Traudl Junger that were documented in a documentary by Melissa Müller in 2002. Traudl was the personal secretary of Adolf Hitler between 1932 up untill his dead in 1944. The manuscript itself, largely focusses on the last days inside the bunker during the siege of the Soviet army on Berlin. Since she was one of the last to leave the bunker, she went through the entire ordeal. Traudl wrote the memories down in a manuscript in 1947. This manuscript was also adapted and published in a book in 1985. It eventually got picked up by the German movie industry in 2004. It's probably the closest too "reality" you can get. It's first hand accounts, written down fairly quickly after the war. But still perceived through a subjective lens of a NAZI-member and translated by the writers of the movie and the writers of the other source materials that base themselves on Traudl's accounts.

Letters From Iwo Jima (2006) has been praised to be historically accurate when it comes to the grand narrative. There are some narratives woven in to create more rapport with the audience. But the timeline of the events occurring seem to be accurate. It also has been praised for using source material from Japanese officers to try and get closer to the reality of those days.

A Bridge Too Far (1977) does something similar then "Letters From Iwo Jima". It gets praises for historical accuracy and it relied on interviews, diaries and memories of soldiers that were inside the battle. But just like the other entries on my list... you are still watching a "movie" not a documentary.

The Longest Day (1962) is no doubt, a Hollywood production. BUT it still respects the timeline and the battles that were fought out directly before, during and directly after the events of june 6th 1944, when the allied coalition invaded Normandy during the events of operation Overlord.

@BridgeOvertroubledWaters I've not yet seen "Letters From Iwo Jima", but the critics are praising it highly. I also love Clint Eastwood as a director.

Der Untergang, ... I think, is one of the best WW2 movies made so far. Only being topped by another German entry: "Das Boot" (1981). Das Boot, however, is not an historically accurate movie, but it does a good job in depicting what soldiers in a U-Boat go through during the war. The scenery (claustrophobic and cramped as it is) is incredible. From the cabins too the Diesel Engine.

@Kwek00 actually starred a few who where there
Patriot96 · 56-60, C
@Patriot96 yes i worked with a guy, Archie, who had a Japanese rifle . Other than that he didnt talk much about it
GypsyMiss · 41-45, F
Is the Holocaust a side story? If not, Schindler's List is a must.
@GypsyMiss excellent film
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
I would include Patton. Largely based on facts, but Hollywood treatment and tour de force by George Scott. Also shows tensions between the Allies.
The Band of Brothers and Pacific miniseries are based on true stories
Nevertooold · 56-60, M
@BridgeOvertroubledWaters But they're 2 seperate series right?
Adstar · 56-60, M
This is a documenry series.. Very comprehensive.. It may be an old series.. But it is closer to WW2 and was made before the woke fascists took control of Media and so you will find more truth in this series.. But if you are a pathetic modern day liberal you might need to run to a safe space and play with crayons instead..

@Adstar Many "a pathetic modern day liberal' were members of the Allied forces that fought and died battling the Axis powers.
caesar7 · 61-69, M
@Adstar I love, love, love that series....so much so that I bought the series on DVD
Adstar · 56-60, M
@JSul3 No modern day liberal types where never part of the allied forces.. People in those days had lived through the great depression and where hard and resilient people with character.. Modern day indoctrinated snowflake liberals would not have lasted a day in those terrible times..
redredred · M
Nothing much better than the “Band of Brothers” series
Longleggedlady · 31-35, F
The Dam busters is fairly accurate as well
Musicman · 61-69, M
The Man Who Never Was
The Devil's Brigade
Merrill's Marauders
Band of Brothers
Anzio
The Gallant Hours
13 Rue Madeleine
The Great Raid

There are quite a few actually.
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
@Musicman Anzio is poor.Darbys Rangers is a better portrayal.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@wonkywinky Anzio shows a better portrayal of the giant mess up that operation was, but you are right. Darby's Rangers was by far the better movie.
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
@Musicman A big "red flag" with a supposedly "historical" war movie based on a historical event is when the General as portrayed, are not actually called by their actual names.Like in "Anzio",the Corps commander was Gen Lucas,of US VI Corps...in the movie he isnt.Or Gen Clark of US V Army,is not.Its probably because they declined to be portrayed due to the historical inaccuracies..In Bridge too far, most historical characters ARE portrayed with their actual names.."Gen Bittrich,LtCol Frost etc.

Go For Broke.....Go for Broke! is a 1951 black-and-white war film directed by Robert Pirosh, produced by Dore Schary and starring Van Johnson and six veterans of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The film co-stars Henry Nakamura, Warner Anderson, and Don Haggerty in its large cast. (From Wikipedia)

While I always seek out documentaries on topics like war, this movie does try to honor those of the 442nd, the most decorated group of WW2....first generation Japanese-Americans who fought for Uncle Sam, while their relatives were in camps in the US.
Patriot96 · 56-60, C
@JSul3 one of my former patients was a member of 442nd
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
Letters From Iwo Jima and Flags of our fathers, were made by Clint Eastwood. One is the Iwo Jima battle from Japanese view, and the other from the US Marine point of view.
Letters is probably the better of the two.
The problem with Flags,is that recently,it has been established that John Bradley for 70 years thought to be one of the 6 flag raisers, was not,and it turned out to be a PFC Schultz. But Eastwood would have been unaware of this in 2006.Also i think that perhaps another might now be erroneous too.Of the six, three were killed with a month of the event.
Operation Mincemeat is also based on true facts
also The Monuments Men
Patriot96 · 56-60, C
@BridgeOvertroubledWaters the original with Clifton Webb is excellent too
Musicman · 61-69, M
@BridgeOvertroubledWaters The original, The Man Who Never Was, was much better.
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
There are war movies based around fictional adventures, like The Dirty Dozen,Where Eagles Dare,Guns of Navarone.Even the acclaimed Saving Private Ryan whilst realistic,is in fact a fictional story.
Then ones based around history but which may or may not actually portray the events so well.1965 Battle of the Bulge is notorious for poorly illustrating the actual event.
Most true to history are Bridge too far,Longest Day,Battle of Britain in my opinion.
Patriot96 · 56-60, C
12 Oclock High is an oldy. Fictional but written by a guy who actually experienced it

The Last Blitzkrieg. A doco with genuine footage of the Nazi death camps. Shocking and hard hitting. I saw it in 1968 so no AI then...
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
To Hell and Back is a "theatrical" portrayal of the career of Audie Murphy of the 15/3rd Infantry.
Patriot96 · 56-60, C
Sink th Bismark may not be factual but watching Dana Winter is worth it. Hot woman
Nevertooold · 56-60, M
I've heard The Band of Brothers was excellent....The Bridge Over the River Kwai
The series Band of Brothers is excellent.
Nevertooold · 56-60, M
@bijouxbroussard i don't think they did but I'm not sure....Band of Brothers didn't cover the pacific part of the war did it?Like all the fighting in the Phillipines?
@Nevertooold It’s about the European theatre. Most dramatizations are about one or the other. The Series The World At War covers everything, beginning to end, European & Pacific Theatres, but that is a documentary series.
@Nevertooold The "Pacific" miniseries covered the war in the Pacific
