Historical Locations give different angles to history

I normally live in the south of England, but am presently right on the north east, at the Border with Scotland. The perspective of history here is vastly different from the south, with a different focus. I am in the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, which changed hands between Scotland and England eleven times, I believe, until England grabbed it (I think in a time of truce) and held on. Berwick has impressive 16th century walls to keep the Scots out, and the ruins of a castle that Edward the First captured from the Scots after massacring the civilian population of the town- to be replaced with English folk later.
The whole area is dotted with battlefields of the English-Scottish wars.

Berwick upon Tweed is still at war with Russia. It never signed a peace treaty at the end of the Crimean War. The Crimea could do with a bit of outside help now.

@jackcros Ah, a Scotsman. Lucky you - the Scottish Borders are God's gift to the world! A souter? Gutterbluid? Jeddart?

@MandyMitchell actually I am a scouser in exile, lol, but with Scots ancestry. I have yet to be seen in a kilt.
I agree it is beautiful up here and with lovely people

The Borders region is so full of history and so much more than just Hadrian's Wall

@Dez580 tremendous history on both sides of the frontier; battles and castles, reiving and smuggling, sea rescues and industry, Romans, Angles, Dalriadans, kings, queens and ghosts and feuds; I might stay here a bit longer.

@MandyMitchell staying in places like Hawick and Jedburgh are ideal to explore this area

@Dez580 Totally agree: a different side to Scotland from the over-touristy Highlands

I remember going past there as a kid in the back of my grandads car
