Rewriting history

History is an amazingly fluid discipline. Each nation seems to write it with a bias towards themselves, and what is fashionable and therefore 'good' one century is vilified the next.
It's fascinating to see the trends change by perusing old books.

Like the Indian mutiny, one minute it's slaughter anything Indian in sight and 150 odd years later and they're the heroes. And this is from a western point of view.

@Allelse that was undoubtedly the most bitterly fought war we had in the 19th century. Incredible bravery - look at Havelock, Rose or Campbell, and terrible massacre of civilians.

@MandyMitchell Not to mention poor old Flashy thrown into the mix.

@Allelse Have you read the Windrush series? Not as humorous as Flashman but well written.
Allelse · 36-40, M
@MandyMitchell No but I'll have a look about for them, my wife recently started a series of books about a character named Mathew Hervey, if she says they're any good I'll give them a look. I find it hard to read historical characters who aren't villains, I grew up reading Sharpe and Flashy who are both villainous by nature.

@Allelse I prefer Windrush to Sharpe. Flashman, in my opinion, is the best written historical soldier I have ever read. Windrush second to him. The same author wrote a trilogy about an English smuggler turned highwayman - Dancing was the first book but I misremember the author's name! Old age does that to one.

@MandyMitchell I've got dick all memory too, anti seizure medication, 3 kinds, I write everything down on my hands and am constantly sending myself emails. Flashy has one of my favourite literary villains, John Charity Spring!!!

@Allelse the slaver wasn't he?
That author was Malcolm Archibald.
I have a little notebook with me all the time for anything I might need

@MandyMitchell Yep! And he was always going off his nut and rambling on in latin.
