Battle of Point Pleasant, Mothman and a New Friendship
Battle at Point Pleasant, Cornstalk and Mothman
This is a joint story by WillaKissing and Akindheart. Pictures taken by WillaKissing. Sorry so Long!!
I was talking to a new friend, WillaKissing, and discovered that they lived near my home town. I was stunned to find out that they lived 45 mins from my 5th great grandfather’s memorial. They were gracious enough to drive in the cold weather to take pictures for me, because I have not seen it yet.
From WillaKissing:
I made friends with akindheart (and yes she is a kind heart) during our friending/bonding process. I found out akindheart was from Cincinnati, Ohio about a two hour and thirty minute drive from my farm in Jackson County, Ohio. While discussing our locations, akindheart asked me if I was close to Point Pleasant, WV where her Great great relative fell in battle to the Indian Chief Cornstalk's forces. It only takes thirty minutes to forty minutes to drive there. I told akindheart that I go there very often for drives and picture taking. I offered to go and get pictures of the monuments of the battle and where her Great great relative is interred at the battle field as well as the enemy of her great great relative.
Here is a little history for you:
The Battle of Point Pleasant was considered the first battle of the Revolutionary War. It was a battle of the British (Lord Dunsmore) /Virginians against the Shawnee Indians led by the famous chief, Cornstalk. The battle took place on Oct 10, 1774. My 5th great grandfather was second in command and unfortunately was killed in battle by Indians on the first day. As the soldiers are returning home, the Battle of Lexington and Concord was starting. This group of soldiers ended up driving Lord Dunsmore out of Virginia.
My 5th great grandfather is buried under the “Magazine” in a mass burial. To see his name on the bronze plaque was very emotional.
Here is the WIKI link. My ancestor is listed as being related to George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush so I guess I am related too.

From Akindheart
Cornstalk did not fare well either. He tried for peace. He came to Ft. Randolph which is at the present site of the battle and was detained. Indians from a surrounding tribe killed Americans at the fort. Cornstalk, his son and 2 others were brutally murdered in retaliation.
From WillaKissing:
I also shared that after the battle was well over and Chief Cornstalk was imprisoned at Fort Rudolph, just before he was brutally murdered by soldiers in retaliation for further Indian attacks that he placed a curse on point Pleasant, WV resulting in the Mothman arrival and multiple mysterious appearances on/at the Silver Bridge that collapsed on 12-15-1967 dropping 31 vehicles into the Icy Ohio River killing 46 people and injuring 9 others.
Now here is where it gets strange: the legend of Mothman :
From WillaKissing:
Every time I go to Point Pleasant, WV I can feel a serious eerie presence of being watched and it hangs over the entire town and Point Pleasant battlefield. I do not feel any relief from this eeriness until I have crossed back over the bridge and my pick up tires are off to the new bridge connecting WV and Ohio. I can't explain it folks, they have tried countless ways to prosper business and industry wise and yet it remains poor with shops that open and close just as fast as they opened, still economically depressed and the only success is marketing the Battlefield and the Mothman. The little town of Point Pleasant is clean and orderly, but just like stepping off into a 1950's setting. You can still feel Chief Cornstalk's curse as you visit.
