I Love History

I really do not understand how ANYONE on GOD'S GREEN EARTH could be nostalgic for ANY PERIOD before the invention and widespread commercialization of the internet.

Life before that point as a student of history was almost not even worth living in...

I truly do not understand 1950s nostalgia in light of this.

Life was hell before mass communications.

You do realize that the 1950s had radio, television, telephone, telegraph, mass publishing media, daily news access through multiple newspapers and magazines, etc., right?

@ChipmunkErnie and yet what you could buy locally for instance was all that was easily obtainable. No internet: global commerce disappears.

You might have had libraries yes but what if you had wanted an obscure tome?

I'm looking at a book on a programming language that even the local Barnes and nobles carries not a single book about...

I HAD To use amazon.

My dad likes Kona Coffee- They keep making the blends locally available disappear..

We've pretty much had to buy online.

@PDXNative1986 We had actual bookstores back then, usually a number of them within driving distance. Plus two libraries in town. And, even at 12 years old, I was an accomplished book-orderer via mail from specialty bookstores in NYC, etc.

@ChipmunkErnie and what's your point? Like I said if you couldn't find it at your bookstores you were shit out of luck.
PDXNative1986 · 36-40, MVIP
@ChipmunkErnie I'll go on further in that if you couldn't find it at your local bookstore you probably didn't even know it existed.

@PDXNative1986 Yes, it was a tough life -- how did we ever survive without instant gratification?
PDXNative1986 · 36-40, MVIP
@ChipmunkErnie I will give you that the encouraging of instant gratification is a terrible aspect of modernism. But you know not everyone exhibits or is a slave to it.

@PDXNative1986 Sadly, most people seem to be -- and use credit cards they can't pay off to fulfill their need for it. :(
PDXNative1986 · 36-40, MVIP
@ChipmunkErnie I'm in debt but I'm slowly paying it back...

I couldn't really even qualify for a debt I couldn't pay off yet...

And I wouldn't want to. I WANT good credit. It's just too important for too many fucking things.

That's why I paid 100 this month towards my card...

I only owe like 500 =/ now 400 something. It won't be long.

@ChipmunkErnie If I ever want to qualify for Auto loan or something I really have to take it seriously.

@ChipmunkErnie I hate credit cards to be honest with you because the rates of interest are just obscene, so I'm paying it off and trying not to use it again. I just needed to build a credit history, y'know? I need to raise my credit score. That's ALL I care about. Taking out a debt and making regular payments.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@PDXNative1986 No idea what my credit card rates are -- I always pay off the full balance when it's due. And if I'm shopping in person, as opposed to online, I pay cash in full.
