The “close door” button in elevators is a placebo. It exists purely to give humans a false sense of control.

@Punxi A decade or so ago, we moved my wife's parents into an apartment, and the manager there told me that that 'close' button did nothing. I can't speak for all elevators, but that one had a disconnected close button.
