School Shooting In Bend, Oregon

Everyone has an opinion, including experts from around the world, who have no clue what it's like to be in Bend, Oregon, want to be experts.

Turns out the 16-year old who committed the murders, was a special needs kid. His mother posted online back in 2020, about how the pandemic affected her kid.

Which leads me to wonder why she decided to buy him a 12-gauge shotgun, when she knew he had mental/emotional issues.

Turns out the a man who lived in the neighborhood, with 2 girls at the school, working from home and on a lunch break, heard the shots, took his own gun, ran to the school, tracked the killer down, and shot him, before emergency personnel could get there.

I don't own a gun and am a strong advocate of gun control laws, and mandatory mental fitness certification for gun owners, but absent of us spending a ton on figuring out what's wrong with us as a nation, I don't blame those who take measures to protect themselves.

When people get tired of coping with crazy relatives who live with them, they set it up so that the cops will arrive and shoot the nutcase. The woman bought the gun because she new her son was going to go on a shooting spree and get killed. But she could get charged with a serious crime and end up in prison.

The question is: "what the hell was she going to do with a shootgun?"

@LordShadowfire
I'm sorry, are you saying she set her own son up?

Yes, I am. That's a common tactic when people get tired of coping with a nutcase who lives with them.

@Diotrephesget your head examined

@Diotrephes Is that what your parents did to you?
LordShadowfire · 51-55, M
My family have been waiting for news as to how he obtained the gun in the first place. We've got some pretty decent gun safety laws in this state.

@LordShadowfire Oregon, just like Washington, allows open carry and concealed carry (no questions asked, Sheriff department must issue).

But you need to be 21. His mother bought the gun and he's 16, so she may be liable.
LordShadowfire · 51-55, M
@Northwest Yeah, she's definitely liable. The only gun a parent is permitted to pass to their kid is a handgun, not a shotgun, so she's going to have to do some fancy talking.
The mother needs to shoulder some blame for providing the shotgun. Kids can get ahold of weapons independently of their parents, but when those parents arm them, especially knowing their children are troubled, they’ve become part of the problem.

But ironically, I bet those same parents will have plenty to say about the man who was forced to shoot their son and protect other folks’ children—due to that negligence.

@bijouxbroussard I don't get some parents. A couple of years ago, also in Oregon, I was at a mall, and a woman wearing short shorts, was sporting a holster, strapped to her thigh. The gun was a semi-auto, 9mm, with a couple of extra clips.

She was carrying a kid in one arm, and a baby in the other arm, and she got in her track and took off. She had another kid in truck as well, not in a car seat.

This was a busy mall and I'm sure she didn't need all this hardware. What if one of the kids grabs the weapon? And of course she was all decked out in MAGA gear.
@Northwest Of course she was. 🙄
It’s tragic enough (in a Darwinian sense) when they get shot by the kids they armed. But unfortunately, they turn their offspring loose on other people’s children. 😞

Still it's weird cos she's in the news saying he didn't have any warning signs. A little anxiety about covid doesn't mean someone will do a mass shooting. But at the same time I dunno, there has to be a reason. I just read that she said he had no warning signs of wanting to shoot people
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Kwek00 Same probability of dying from Covid.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@MrBrownstone You're the one that sounded sure of themselves that covid behaviorally causes mass shootings, what is your degree to make you so sure, what kind of things have you heard?
Northwest · M
@SatanBurger

Still believe it's too early to say anything. Yet I do agree many show opinions far too early.

I have yet to actually say anything about this incident.
