Indiana Woman Shot Dead Protecting Her Son During Facebook Marketplace Deal Gone Wrong

An 18-year-old South Bend, Indiana, man has been charged with murder after a woman critically injured in a Facebook Marketplace-related shooting died days later.

Jean Gragg, 40, died Saturday after being hospitalized since a June 10 shooting in the 2600 block of Mac Arthur Boulevard in the Edison Park neighborhood.

Authorities identified the suspect as John Harrison Ford, who was taken into custody following the shooting and later charged after Gragg’s death upgraded the case to murder.

He remains held at the St. Joseph County Jail as the case proceeds through court.

Court documents show the encounter began when Ford arrived at the residence where Gragg’s son was attempting to sell a watch through Facebook Marketplace.

Investigators said Ford met the son at the home to complete the transaction, according to WSBT.

According to court filings, Ford allegedly brandished a firearm while inspecting the watch and attempted to take it by force.

Officials said Gragg stepped in after witnessing the confrontation and moved between Ford and her son as the situation escalated outside the home.

Surveillance video reviewed by investigators shows Gragg confronting Ford during the dispute as she attempted to push him away from the property.

Officials said the footage corroborates witness statements describing a rapidly escalating confrontation.

Investigators said Ford left the immediate area after being confronted but later turned back toward the residence.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows him moving away from the home before returning moments later.

Authorities said Ford then fired multiple shots toward the residence as Gragg moved back toward the home. She was struck in the head and collapsed at the scene. Ford fled immediately after the shooting, according to WNDU.

Law enforcement later recovered a firearm believed to be connected to the incident near Cedar Glen Apartments. Additional surveillance footage helped investigators track Ford’s movements after the shooting.

One person dead, another in jail. A great day for the second amendment again. ☹
