Woman strolling on Florida beach saves drowning man; turns out he’s wanted for brutal double murder

In a story that sounds more like a crime thriller than real life, a Florida woman’s act of compassion has collided head-on with a brutal double homicide case—raising sobering questions about the chaos unfolding in everyday America.

A woman identified only as Belinda was enjoying a quiet morning walk along Vero Beach on March 24 when the calm was shattered by desperate cries from the surf. Without hesitation, she rushed into the ocean to help a struggling man who appeared on the brink of death.

What happened next was a race against time—and the odds.

Belinda coached the man through the waves, urging him to conserve energy and let the ocean work in his favor.

“So, he got on his back, and he said, ‘I’m exhausted, I’m tired,’” she recalled. “And I said, ‘Do it! Get on your back and let the waves carry you, you can do it, come on.’”

Against the current and his failing strength, the man followed her instructions and eventually made it safely back to shore. Once there, he made a curious remark, saying he was “going to take a long vacation.”

At the time, it may have sounded like relief talking. In hindsight, it carries a chilling undertone.

Only later did Belinda learn the shocking truth: the man she had just pulled from the jaws of death was identified as 64-year-old Jesse Ellis—now wanted in connection with a double killing earlier that very morning.

Authorities say Ellis is suspected of murdering his wife, Stacie Mason, and her alleged romantic partner, Danny Ooley.

During a March 25 press briefing, David Currey laid out a disturbing sequence of events. He alleges Ellis tracked the pair to a downtown library parking lot around 7:00 a.m., where both victims—county employees—were sitting in Ooley’s vehicle. That’s when Ellis reportedly opened fire, killing them both.

Police say he then fled the scene and headed straight for the beach, where witnesses later saw him walk into the ocean “fully clothed.”

Investigators have also revealed the couple’s marriage had been unraveling, with separation and divorce looming in recent months—a tragic but all-too-familiar backdrop in violent domestic cases.

Despite the horror of what he’s accused of, Belinda stands by her decision to act. “I could not leave him in the water no matter what,” she said. “Everybody is going through something.” Still, she admits hindsight has changed her perspective—saying she would call 911 immediately if faced with the same situation again.
