I don't believe it's a matter of the government ripping off the public, but rather the price is an economic way of forcing people to self-ration fuel.
If the government lowered the price of fuel by lowering the excise tax on fuel, everyone would continue to use just as much fuel as they always had been using which solves nothing.
Where the problem lies right now is in 'supply'. Australia is getting little to no fuel from Japanese refiners because Japan is not getting any crude oil from the Middle East.
The Australian government has two choice to conserve fuel... either start rationing fuel to the public, or keep the price high to force people to self-conserve.
