The number of asylum applications is increasing because the government's commitment to reducing "illegal immigration" includes speeding up the processing of legal applications. Offering asylum is a legal obligation incumbent upon every state. Per capita, the UK has one of the lowest rates of irregular migration in Europe.

Am I worried? No, because there is a declining birth rate in the UK and a rapidly ageing population which will need to be cared for. I will be worried when population starts to decline.

I saw the list on TV. Most are from Pakistan, but are usually immediately returned, as are those from Bangladesh. Afghanistan was second on the list of refugees trying to get here. We need to take Afghan refugees because we screwed up their country by invading it. As for Pakistan and Bangladesh - well we ruled India for 300 years and basically stole all their natural resources, so, morally, we owe their ancestors some reparations. We also invited many Pakistani and Indian people here in the 50s, 60s and 70s in order to utilise them as cheap labour to rebuild our infrastructure after the war devastated our country. So, we owe these people.
