Evacuations Soar as Flames Roar – California Wildfires…Again

People in parts of Los Angeles County were evacuated as the Canyon Fire roared across from Ventura County overnight and expanded to nearly 5,000 acres. 14,000 people and 5,000 buildings were in the path of evacuation orders.

Then there is the Gifford Fire at over 100,000 acres, and the Gold Fire at 1,000 acres…just a few of the over 4,400 fires in California this year. The total acreage so far? 279,971 acres have burned. As the temperatures stay high, with no chance of rain, things are looking grim for Cali residents. Not all of the fires are contained.

The Gifford Fire- California wildfires – the largest so far. As of Friday morning, the fire had burned 104,401 acres (163 square miles) in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, with 15% containment, said fire managers for the U.S. Forest Service.

On Thursday, Gifford spread rapidly at its northwest corner, about 20 miles inland of Pismo Beach. Fire crews were forced to withdraw for safety reasons, the Forest Service report said, and evacuation orders were expanded. By the end of the day, the evacuation zone covered 840 square miles, including the rural community of Huasna and Lopez Lake Recreation Area. Almost 3,000 structures were threatened.

The cause of these fires has not been released. California wildfires are exceedingly devastating, as we learned from the LA fires in January. Most of those folks haven’t rebuilt, thanks in large part to Karen Bass and Gavin Newsom. The current list of wildfires threatens homes, families, pets, wildlife, and livestock.
