2 Oregon men die from exposure in a forest after they went out to look for Sasquatch

STEVENSON, Wash. (AP) — Two Oregon men were found dead in a Washington state forest after they failed to return from a trip to look for Sasquatch, authorities said Saturday.

The 59-year-old and 37-year-old appear to have died from exposure, the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office said via Facebook. The weather and the men’s lack of preparedness led the office to draw that conclusion, it said.

Sasquatch is a folkloric beast thought by some to roam the forests, particularly in the Pacific Northwest.

The two men were found in a heavily wooded area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, which is about 150 miles (240 kilometers) northeast of Portland.

A family member reported them missing at around 1 a.m. on Christmas Day after they failed to return from a Christmas Eve outing.

Sixty volunteer search-and-rescue personnel helped in the three-day search, including canine, drone and ground teams. The Coast Guard used infrared technology to search from the air.

Authorities used camera recordings to locate the vehicle used by the pair off Oklahoma Road near Willard, which is on the southern border of the national forest.
One of the many crappy sensationalistic cryptid shows on TV will play this up as ' 2 men went into the wilderness in search of Bigfoot and never returned alive'.

Hard to decide if I find this funny or sad.

@NCCindy I did not see a "Darwin Finalists" category.

@NCCindy Its both. Sad that people died, funny that a 60 person search party found them, but not sasquatch.

My best guess, since the legend lives, is that the Sasquatch was probably originally based on the last Neanderthal from thousands of years ago. But I admit I have not studied the geography from Neanderthal days. But I'm aware that we don't have those anymore, just like we no longer have mammoths. There are still other beasts in the forests. Just not human like.

@Mindful Neanderthals did not originate in North America. Although it's possible that Neanderthals may have reached North America, but that's not probable.

To top it off, the Lake Missoula great floods (15,000 years ago or so at the end of the last ice age), that formed the Pacific Northwest, wiped out human life.

My guess is that alcohol may have been involved.

As to the legend, it may have began with a really drunk woman, banging a real hairy dude.

So alcohol would be involved as well.

I noticed that they failed to mention that the search party also did not find any sasquatch ...

@krf336 How do we know?

@LordShadowfire Good point. It could also be part of the coverup.

@Northwest Had to be said. You understand.

That's Oregonians for you. Ask them if they need a coat, and they will say no as they stand there and shiver.

It's really sad that's how their journey ended.

@LordShadowfire I know. They were looking at least a couple of hundred miles South West of where they should be.
