He was a charlatan. A Bible-waving conman who took advantage of simple, under-educated people. He exploited and encouraged his flock's lowest prejudices and fears.

Maybe he had good qualities. I don't know.

@badminton My friend sometimes had the 700 Club on, mostly to laugh at him, but one time I was visiting her, and I can’t remember if it was a letter or someone who called, but a woman asked Robinson how she could get her husband to stop beating her. She said she was trying to be a good wife, but he kept losing his temper. Robinson told her she needed to try harder. He actually told that poor woman that if she was "right with God", her husband wouldn’t "need to correct" her. We were both so angry—my friend never turned that show on again. 🤬
