The real answer to this is that those other countries should be concerned too. IDK, it's by no means the end of the world, but it is a legitimate national security concern. We don't want them checkin' out all our air bases and nuclear sites if we can help it.

@LvChris They didn't shoot it down because it would kill people on the ground. They're probably using a balloon because it's cheaper than launching a whole new satellite just to see whatever they're looking for. It's not the end of the world or nothin', but yeah we obviously should be concerned.

@LvChris If it wasn't a threat, the Chinese probably wouldn't have bothered sending it. And yeah, the military doesn't actually want a military scandal where a bunch of white suburbanites or whatever got killed pretty much directly because of their own actions. And also... civilian lives are national security.
Yeah, that's sort of how the news works. There's a ton of shit going on at any given time; it's impossible to keep up with all of it, all of the time. If your point is that news coverage, broadly, isn't calculated to be proportionate to risk to human life and well-being, then yeah, based, but that was never in dispute.
Being outraged by this one, but not all the ones before? Being concerned about this one, but not all the ones before? Nah, fam. No one gave a shit until it was this one. No one even cared enough to know.
