Anniversary of Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, when the orbiter broke up on reentry. I just drove by Space Center Houston, and the orbiter mockup sitting on the back of the 747 brought back some sad memories of that day and those that followed.

@exexec texas or Florida. challenger or Columbia?
exexec · 61-69, C
@akindheart I was in California at the plant where the Shuttle orbiters were made. I was in a meeting with NASA and Air Force people, and we weren't allowed to see the Challenger event until we got home that night. When we left the facility, newspeople were everywhere and we were told to tell them we knew nothing. It was true. We knew nothing.
exexec · 61-69, C
@akindheart I live in TX but spent a lot of time at most NASA centers.

exexec · 61-69, C
@akindheart Somebody interrupted the meeting and announced what happened. That's all we knew.
exexec · 61-69, C
@akindheart It was fun, but I'm glad to be out of it.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@exexec oh wow. so you were in the thick of things but didn't know. wow.
exexec · 61-69, C
@akindheart Those of us in the meeting knew less than 99% of America until we got home and turned on our TV; or in my case, until I got to my hotel room.
