With the gift of hindsight, I wonder if they actually were worried about Communists during the Red Scare. Maybe it was like today, where they just used the fear of Communism to win elections.
@BohoBabe I'll go with whipping up irrational fear of communism to win elections. Communism was never a threat in the U.S. The Communist Party USA couldn't at any time get even 1% of the vote.
@badminton And while the Soviet Union was a terrible authoritarian dictatorship, they were busy with their own cold war against China. Neither country liked America, but they weren't concerned with us at the time.
@badminton Some people need a "boogeyman". It was the United States fear of Communism that caused them to support brutal right dictatorships in other countries.
