Awkward Moment

On Tuesday, as part of a visit to Germany, the President of the PA (Palestinian Authority), Mahmoud Abbas, was doing a press conference with the German Chancellor.

At one point, a reporter asked Abbas if he's going to apologize for the Munich Olympics Massacre, and his response include the following: "Israel committed 50 holocausts".

The press conference was but immediately short, with the German Chancellor making a hasty exit, then on Wednesday, his office expressed disgust over the casual use of the term Holocaust and 50 times, when it's a singularity. Abbas's office also issued a statement that expressed the same feeling, but without an outright apology.

Germany is preparing to commemorate the 50th Munich Olympics Massacre anniversary on Sept 5th.

Abbas is on his 18th year of a 4-year Presidential term, and the 87 year-old has not figured out yet, that he's an obstacle to peace and the well-being of his people.

I will admit that i am woefully ignorant of the politics of that region.
I do believe that when religions are at odds and territory is involved, little by way of peace can be expected.

Due to familial issues, I am in that part of the world almost on yearly basis. Rather than go to Adam and Eve every single time, the focus should change to dealing with it on the same basis we do every other crisis around the world.

In Israel, you have a "left", a "right" and a "hard left" and a "hard right".

The Israeli hard right believes (whether it's a true belief, or an excuse), that the land is theirs, and it extends beyond the borders of Israel/Wes Bank, and it was given to them by none other than God. They ran the government for nearly 17 out of the past 18 years, and as a result, the settlers in the West Bank, increased from a few here and there, to a nearly 800,000 Orthodox problem. There is virtually no difference between these folks, and the Islamists they hate. They treat women the same way, they dress about the same way, they want religion to rule everything, and they rely mostly on handouts from the government. They are also backed and supported by US Evangelicals.

The Israeli "left" may get a chance, with new elections coming up soon, but they are in the same precarious position that the Democrats are in, with the mid-term elections.

On the Palestinian side, the bulk of Palestinians exist in the Diaspora these days. Inside the West Bank, they lead a very depressing life, with virtually no rights. The Israeli government does everything possible, to push them to leave. They can't even fix a falling wall in their home, because they will not be permitted to do so. They also have to go through multiple checkpoints, to visit their neighbors, get to work, worship, etc. They also need to go through Israel, for every single we take for granted: travel, get a passport, work outside the West Bank, etc. Picture South Africa, without the racial angle, and you get the picture.

Nevertheless, the PLO is a secular organization, and is essentially also at war with Hamas and Islamic Jihad, but they are also corrupt to the core.

I can travel to Israel, any time I want, and I would be handed an Israeli passport, no questions asked, because my mother, who never lived in Israel, is "Jewish", despite the fact that she was agnostic, and I am an Atheist. But a Palestinian, who holds a deed to their house, within Israel, is not allowed to even enter the country.

So, it's not a simple issue "bad Ayrabs, if they only shut up and not make trouble, it will all be better".

As to the Abraham accords, there's really nothing new in them. The countries that entered into these agreements, have been working together for decades, and their business/technologies ties, only improve year after year. What was promised by Trump: peace, was never part of those accords, but the Trump enthusiasts have their head up their asses, and believe be deserves a Nobel for the effort.

Those countries are NOT at war with each other: the UAE, Bahrain, etc. The warring parties, or more accurately the parties that have not settled their differences are the Palestinians and the Israelis, and the Abraham Accords, proposed a solution: through attrition, empty out the West Bank from its Palestinian residents, and the problem goes away. Brilliant, right?

Further complicating the issue, is the Gaza problem. The PLO wants nothing to do with Hamas or the Islamic Jihad. So, 'why aren't they building topless beaches in Gaza, attracting European tourists' is akin to Marie Antoinette's infamous 'Let them eat cake'. It also shows that those making the claim, have not set foot on a Gaza beach.

Again, thank you, @Northwest.
I knew the "abraham accords" were nothing more than window dressing. A reason, maybe, for jared to spend time developing financial support.
Boiled down past the nuances, religion and territory.

A reason, maybe, for jared to spend time developing financial support.

And, he did. Just as soon as his father in law was of the office, Jared started a venture capital firm, with $0 from his own pockets.

The UAE dropped $2B in the fund, and the Saudis $500M. He's got zero VC experience, about the same amount of experience he had, when his father in law, put him in charge of just about everything.

This ought to be illegal, but that's effectively how Trump drained the swamp.

Steven Mnuchin also started a find, and the Saudis dropped hundreds of $Ms into it.

@Northwest another 500 million i think i read, for mnuchin.
Draining the swamp was just another three word catch phrase. Which of course are at the core of the trump political stance.
