Calls to #BoycottWalgreens grow on social media as customers denied birth control, condoms

Source: ABC 7 Eyewitness News

Some customers are calling for a Walgreens boycott after claiming that some shoppers are being denied birth control and condoms.

In several tweets, some customers said they were denied the products due to a cashier's moral or religious beliefs.

Walgreens responded to those posts, saying company policy allows pharmacists to step away from filling a prescription if they have a moral objection.

But the company said the employee is required to refer the prescription to another pharmacist or manager on duty.

The same situation occurred with Walgreens pharmacists several years ago over PlanB once the product was legalized to dispense in America.

Many major pharmacies have a policy that allows pharmacists denial filling PlanB due to moral beliefs with the same safeguard of referring to chief pharmacist to fill or send to another location. For rural / more conservative locations in America, I assume the percentage of successful filled or transferred prescriptions will be low.

I’ve heard both sides debated by pharmacists - the forums are crazy. It’s not as much religious as it is moral.
The condoms portion is ridiculous. Prepare to see a rapid incline in STIs if this persists.
Not all pharmacists have the same strong moral obligations. My personal decision is to dispense.

You leave your moral objections at the door. You have a job to do, so do it. This pharmacist needs to be fired.
@JHNTHN I would put that a bit more nuanced. If you have professional concerns about a drug, you should be allowed to let a colleague handle it. But religious believes? Yes, those should be left at home.

Maybe they didn't get their welfare check yet and couldn't pay.
