Why not try

Gun violence is destroying children in the US, and really what most gun folk are saying about it is, "so what? Who cares? We love our guns more than we do our children."
However, there are places in the world that still value the lives of children

I know it feels good to do something but why do something do ineffectual? This is a software issue not a hardware issue. 9/11, OKC and the Happyland Social Club arson are the three largest mass murders in US history and no gun was used in any of them. The largest school mass murder was done with dynamite.

This is a mental health issue. The kids who went to school with this kids all knew he was scary and weird with a penchant for animal abuse and cutting himself. Everyone who knew him knew he was a problem, teachers, cops and other adults but no one did anything.

He was already breaking a half-dozen Texas gun laws, what new law would change things?

@redredred I have to agree the lack of resources for mental health is definitely a problem.
