Why is anyone still using google?

Using it as your engine results in your every online move being tracked and being sold by google to companies trying to get your money nevermind the targeted ads, etc. use another search engine. Plenty work just as well. I personally like DuckDuckGo. Make it your home page and preferred search engine on every device (phone, tablet, laptop and desktop). Unless you eliminate it everywhere you’re still being stalked recorded and your personal information. I’m not referring to your passwords, credit cards, social security number, etc. Companies are using your buying, searching, considering buying, travel, considering travel to try to control you with targeted ads after they pay google for it. You lock the house door when you go out. Why leave your internet history exposed ready to exploited?

I stopped using google account after my ex started working for google and hacked in to spy on me.. Don't trust people lol

@jackjjackson I probably should've, but I didn't think about it at the time, and now I've blocked him everywhere, and locked all my profiles so haven't heard from him in a while

Nice. Good riddance to bad rubbish. @SW-User

@jackjjackson I've been stalked and hacked by scammers for years, the police won't help anyone and they know it!

Been using DuckDuck for awhile now. I love it 👍
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Good for you sir! Spread the word. Google needs to be shut down. Google is not trustworthy. @SmoothKnight
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
No idea, I don't use it.

I work in IT Support and we don't use Google anymore to find answers to tech issues, I mostly check Reddit these days or specific support sites the vendors have.

Google has been overrun with fake tech support sites that basically attempt to get you to download something ostensibly to fix your tech issue, but in reality this is a way to trick you into installing malware on your PC.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Peaches That would happen if you used their service to scan your computer...glad you were able to resolve it.
Peaches · F
@SumKindaMunster Yep! The guy did remove it for me after I told him something was stopping the scan?! That I removed it and now they've left a cookie behind to spy on me, he took it off. Now I'm using another one to help me with trackers and hackers. I'm sick of paying technicians that just can't get the job done.

There's always a grey shadow that's here before my comments post? It stayed "grey" and the post wouldn't go through so I had to post this again. Weird?!

It's very easy to simply ignore targeted ads unless they interest me, just like I ignore all kinds of ads all the time. Its no drama for me.

I don't give a toss about someone trying to sell me something I may or may not need.
However I do give a toss about digital political manipulation, the kinda Cambridge Analytica scandal which led to the ruinous Brexit vote in the UK, plus, of course, that over the water one of wealthiest nations in the world were convinced that their best interests were represented by Donald Trump.
That's what worries me.

Duckduckgo already said a couple months ago they were going to censor "disinformation" in their searches.. they are google2.0....they use to be good but are no better than google... try bravesearch or yandex
I like DuckDuckGo as well. I won't use Google.
Snuffy1957 · 61-69, M
I quit using Google... I use DuckDuckGo
*sigh*

It doesn't matter what search engine you use. Your internet provider is logging every website you visit. Your device is fingerprinted, so even if you use a different IP address or a VPN, you will still be recognized. And once you log onto a website, you can be identified that way, too.

The only way to avoid being tracked is to use a burner phone, access the internet from a public location (like a Starbucks) with a Tor browser, and only use that phone once. Anything short of that and you're just fooling yourself. But if it makes you feel better to use DuckDuckGo or Brave or whatever, go right ahead.
I heard there was some problem with DuckDuckGo, too. Personally, I don’t care if they sell my information. They have to stay in business somehow. You have no privacy online anyway unless you take extraordinary steps, and for what?

Although, we may have to do this as some states will be tracking searches for abortion services, trans healthcare, and other newly illegal activities. We are all living in 1984.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
You may be an exception Leo. Why would they in your case? @LeopoldBloom
@jackjjackson Control. Same as for everyone else. It’s hilarious if you think you’re not being tracked because you’re using a different browser.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Using an openvpn and not using google doesn’t leave the trail you do Leo. @LeopoldBloom
I like the targeted ads! They let me know what I need to buy!

@SumKindaMunster Well, I know they got through McAfee when I had it. I tried to get help on their forum and later found out I was muted. They also put a "stinger" on it. THEN one of them (he hides behind a "God" profile here) tricked me in to getting IPVanish for a VPN, it too was hacked. So I dumped it and came back here and told the b@stard off! I left SW for 4 months over trying to call these scammers out. They are professional hackers and it's a revenge hacking in my case, because my bank got most of my money back and their fragile egos can't handle that. I had trusted them years ago and let them in my computer remotely to help me recover my Face Book account.....they never left.👎They hassle me way more on Face Book than they will here, now that I came out publicly this past July. I named two of them. I think they are working from an illegal call center. Hope they get busted some how.😏
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Peaches Never, ever let someone you don't know or trust install something on our computer.

Hope it works out! 🤗
Peaches · F
@SumKindaMunster I had no experience at the time with computers, I used to trust everyone. It hasn't worked out at all, but I really don't care anymore. They can't get in my bank account, at least I wasn't dumb enough to put that info AND my s.s. # on line!😎If there's something you don't want anyone to know, don't put it on line.

I'm not any more paranoid about Google "tracking me" than I am about drinking fluoridated water

Seriously, their "tracking" doesn't amount to sh*t, so why would I lose sleep over it at night?

Seriously, what "personal information" did you actually GIVE to Google?!?!?!

Seriously, if Google, Facebook, etc. gives you "targeted ads" what difference does it make if the ads are generic and not based on your browsing history? Moreover, if you're concerned about ads dragging you out of your bed in the middle of the night and making you disappear, why aren't you using an adblocker, at the browser level, rather than worrying about details at the site level (Google)?

Did you ever worry about your tv killing you, because your local NBC affiliate showed ads during the newscast, to make that newscast free to you? Or because basic cable did the same to make Duck Dynasty somewhat free to you (beyond the cost of basic cable itself)?

Can you give me specific examples of how Google has actually harmed you when you used any of it services without providing a credit card?

Moreover, you can disable "history" in certain parts of the Google ecosystem as well

And any site could track you, regardless of what they SAY they are doing. You have to take DuckDuckGo's word for it that they aren't tracking you. That's the nature of a wide area network.

I'm happy with Google's Search results, and being able to fine tune Google News as a news aggregator, and Gmail, and Google Voice, and Google Calendar, and Google Drive, and Google Apps, and YouTube, etc. so I have no incentive to switch to anywhere else for any of this functionality, particularly since any "tracking" they may do of me in return for giving me all this for free does not harm me one bit. And since I have an adblocker active in general, I don't even see ads in the first place, on any site.
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@SW-User I used to use an ad blocker, but I got tired of some sites asking me to turn it off. I'm with you, I don't care if they track me and show me targeted ads. And it's weird that people are all worked up about a search engine when their internet provider has a record of every site they visit. If someone is doing something illegal, law enforcement will go to their IP for records, not google.
SW-User
@Lila15 I used to use AdBlocker Ultimate, then whitelist the one or two sites that actually prompted me to turn it off AND simultaneously reduced functionality of the site. The only one I really remember not working as well with the adblocker on was weather.com ... so with Weather.com, I experimented with trial and error using the NoScript extension to find with domains needed to be blocked to prevent the annoying ads, without losing functionality

But lately, I've started using uBlock Origin, and I've disabled the previous two extensions while I see how uBlock Origin does ... and it just seems to work, even on Weather.com ... I don't get prompted to turn anything off, I don't lose any functionality, and I don't have to experiment with each of the 100 domains that Weather.com retrieves third-party content from
