The Ukrainian President has requested emergency entry into NATO and signed an application publicly

I dunno. I think this is a bad move. The news had been pushing the story that Ukraine joining NATO was a Putin delusion, and it seems pretty unlikely NATO wants to be sign up to intervene in conflicts right on Russia's border anyway
Are you sure you're not talking about the EU?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has officially signed an application for Ukraine's membership in the European Union, according to a post from his verified Facebook page.
https://www.npr.org/2022/02/28/1083528087/ukraine-european-union

EU is already providing material support to Ukrainian civilians:
EU humanitarian aid

The Commission announces an additional €90 million for emergency aid programmes to help civilians affected by the war in Ukraine, as part of an urgent aid appeal by the United Nations. The funding will help people inside Ukraine and in Moldova. This new EU humanitarian aid will provide food, water, health, shelter and help cover their basic needs.

EU Civil Protection Mechanism

The Commission is also coordinating the delivery of material assistance via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to Ukraine, with offers from currently 20 Member States: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands – which includes 8 million essential medical care items and civil protection support. A first truck load from Slovenia arrived yesterday to Ukraine's capital Kyiv.
NATO had been trying to sign up Ukraine in years past and that is not just a Russian delusion, but a matter of public record. NATO made a mistake trying to expand into Ukraine, though of course, that in no way justifies Putin's brutality.

At this stage, it's too late. It's a desperate (yet understandable) move from Zelensky to try and join the EU (NATO by proxy?)

NATO will not sign up a country involved in an active war. Also, if they did, it would not stop the Russian offensive because it's already committed. For NATO to accept Ukraine, it would mean a commitment to direct military intervention. That would be a brutal escalation and would also seriously risk nuclear war. It can't be signed.

The Zelensky government will fall. NATO can't intervene directly but will supply arms and logistical support to the Ukrainian resistance, now and thereafter.

Them joining NATO will escalate this to a very high degree, maybe a world war. The best way for this to resolve itself is for other nations to keep giving Ukrainians weapons to fight back the Russians and hopefully claim victory... Or make the invasion so bloody for the Russians that they are left reeling even if they defeat Ukraine.

But... Tank duels between the best tanks the west has to offer and Russia's sounds pretty interesting lol

@deadgerbil It's for U.E. membership, not NATO
deadgerbil · 22-25
@Elessar I was wondering lol I've only heard EU stuff. But just imagine how joining NATO would go 😬

@deadgerbil Bad for everyone who doesn't want to become vapour, not the time (yet?) for that.

I've read about an EU one, not a NATO one

@Elessar That's all I've seen as well. I think he has the EU and NATO conflated.
dakotaviper · 56-60, M
Very doubtful, since Putin has already stated that he'll Nuke anybody who sends Troops to help the Ukrainians.

He's asking for EU membership, not NATO. These are two different things.
