Should we have listened to Patton?

“I understand the situation. Their (the Soviet) supply system is inadequate to maintain them in a serious action such as I could put to them. They have chickens in the coop and cattle on the hoof — that’s their supply system. They could probably maintain themselves in the type of fighting I could give them for five days. After that it would make no difference how many million men they have, and if you wanted Moscow I could give it to you. They lived on the land coming down. There is insufficient left for them to maintain themselves going back. Let’s not give them time to build up their supplies. If we do, then . . . we have had a victory over the Germans and disarmed them, but we have failed in the liberation of Europe; we have lost the war!”

George S. Patton

Yet did we? 🤷‍♂️

What were the borders then compared to now?

@DeWayfarer

We had to win another war, called the Cold War... it took almost 50 years.

Unless you think the Cold War was a continuation of WW2...?

@DeWayfarer All of eastern Europe fell behind an iron curtain for decades. Murder and cruelty were prolific. Communism crushed the spirits of hundreds of millions of people who were condemmed to a lifetime under totalitarianism. Why so few Hollywood movies about this?
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Thinkerbell with certain exceptions when haven't we been at war with them after WWII?

Yet those borders have changed. We have lost other areas though. Vietnam is a good example.

@DeWayfarer Mao murdered about 40 million people in the 5 years prior to Vietnam. He sponsored North Vietnam in the beginning of the war. Who's the bad guy there?
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@irishmolly72 I'm not glorifying this. Yet fact is fact. The borders have changed and therefore that last part just simply isn't true!

Not exactly a feel good movie. @irishmolly72
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@irishmolly72 why are you attacking me on facts?
we have lost the war!”

That just isn't true!

He is quoting Patton. @DeWayfarer
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@jackjjackson so am I. See the very end of her quote from him.

@DeWayfarer Not attacking, just venting/debating. The Pax Americana has lasted a long time. Literally billions of people have been raised out of poverty. I know it was far from perfect, but I hope it continues.

Reagan, Thatcher and John Paul actually won the final victory of WW2 IMO.
