French leader Macron gets high marks for trying to be statesman

So refreshing to hear a political leader searching for common interests that could be the basis of compromise and mutual understanding, rather than resorting to power plays and saber rattling.
Macron's essential challenge is making sure things don't get worse on the ground "before building confidence gestures and mechanisms." In an interview with the French newspaper Journal du Dimanche, Macron said Putin might make Ukraine only a means to achieve a bigger goal.

"The geopolitical objective of Russia today is clearly not Ukraine, but to clarify the rules of cohabitation with NATO and the EU," Macron said. Even if Ukraine's security cannot be a bargaining chip, Macron said, "it is also legitimate for Russia to pose the question of its own security."
When the standoff started, he was a in a good position. The US reaction (closing NATO ranks, and commitments to level severe sanctions on the oligarchs), as well as the air bridge established to arm the Ukraine, makes an invasion very costly, in lives and $s, and hits Putin and his oligarchs where it hurts: their secret cash stockpile.

Macron's initiative may be a way for everyone to save face, and resolve it diplomatically.

@Northwest Stick and carrot. The classic tools of diplomacy.
It is good to see France negotiating and acting like Europe consists of sovereign nations for a change.

Russia is also likely dealing with France because like Russia the French put their own interests first and Paris has had no trouble in the past telling NATO aka Washington to shove it when it is not in their best interest. France also has the largest NATO army in Europe.
