Well at least you have a landlord to palm it off on. My air conditioning went out. Repairman said it was just the blower motor, but because the blower motor was behind the furnace it would cost $900 to replace it. He warned me that if something did happen to cooling coils they would have to pull the furnace again to get to them. Given the age -- it was old when I bought the house 20 years ago, so probably at least 30 years old, and perhaps the original going back to 1962 -- did I want to consider a new cooling unit while they had it out to replace the blower motor. And when I decided that was helpful advice to avoid a litany of high priced band aids rather than just upscale marketing, the question became did I want to replace the furnace unit as well? Convert to electric? Go to a heat pump? $17,000 later I have a whole new system. Granted it provides a more effective heating/cooling balance in the house, is far more energy efficient which should pay for itself over time, is much quieter when running, comes with a warranty that will outlive me, and increases the resale value of the house. . .but the new owners or renters (depending upon what my sons doe with it when I'm gone) are going to enjoy most of that.
