Just gotta love winter.

it is -18 outside (0 F) and my son's furnace decides it is time to not work. Of course there is no one home to notice but when I checked up on his cats today I noticed how cold it is in the townhouse. The pilot light will not stay lit so time to phone for a repair company. I don't have the experience or the parts to fix it so send in the experts. Anytime in the next 6 hours they should be there.

@jimjim1969 The old furnace doesn't have a thermocouple. It has a thermopile and when I replaced it the furnace started to work like the day it was manufactured.

@hippyjoe1955 that is old, don't see thermopile any more

@jimjim1969 Replacements are easy to come by. The guy behind the parts counter recognized it immediately and went to the stock room and came back with one in a few minutes. Yes the furnace was made in the 1960s. The one in my house was built in the 1950s and still works like a charm. I am wary of replacing proven technology with newer stuff that seems to have a lot of problems. A lady from our church had a very cold house when her 2 year old high efficiency furnace died on her. I think there was something in the electronics that went down. Fortunately she had a fireplace because the company that sold her the furnace didn't have the part she needed to fix it so her house was cold for almost a week.
