the lightning bugs are back

eeeeee
Top | New | Old
When I lived in Jakarta we used to get these swarms of flying termites during the rainy season. They'd appear out of nowhere and there would be thousands of them. They fly around for a bit then shed their wings and crawl off. They leave behind thousands of wings all over your patio 👀 The first time I saw them I was watching Apollo 13 with the lights off and I just saw all of this flickering where the light was cast on the wall. When I looked outside it was like a storm of these things, literally as if it was raining bugs. I've never seen anything like it.

@UBotMate that sound terrifying. When did you live in Jakarta? And do you have fireflies where you live now?
@itsok It was between 1996 and 1998. You know, when you were about 2yrs old 🤭 There are no fireflies here, just flying ants, lol. There isn't that much bug life in the UK in terms of anything too invasive or creepy

@UBotMate I was a whopping 5-7 😤
Flying ants creep me out. Fireflies are pretty and never bother people. As kids my sister and I caught a bunch because we thought it would be so much fun to have lightning bugs flying through our room. It was fun that night, but not nearly as much fun the next morning

I haven't seen them in a couple years. There's a tree and brush line they once covered every night during the season. I've wondered the past couple years why they are not showing up.
Along with shooting stars, & moonbeams, they are summer magic;
gathering here in my meadow after dusk.
Their chorus of blinking lights in the tall grass, beckons me forward.

Some will land on an extended fingertip. Like a glowing ember, lighting the way.

It's so good to have them back!☺
Always makes me happy

@catastrophecarnival me too. I watched them for a while this evening
Reject · 26-30, M
'Cause they'd fill the open air and leave teardrops everywhere
You'd think me rude, but I would just stand and stare 🎵
@Reject 🙂

JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
Since it's been the coldest May since 1967 here, I haven't seen much insect life yet.
itsok · 31-35, F
@JimboSaturn last night was the first time I’ve seen them this year
Pfuzylogic · M
You don’t want to know what we did with them when we were kids. 😱
itsok · 31-35, F
@Pfuzylogic I dare not speak of it either
SwampFlower · 31-35, F
My woods are so blinky 😍
@itsok Make nephew catch a whole bunch of them for you lol, and then just release them when it's all over 😁
itsok · 31-35, F
@sstronaut that doesn’t seem like work 😅
@itsok He's doing it until you say when 😅

He's not being rewarded for doing chores, he's just being made to do tasks, right? 😂

It's an extra task
tobynshorty · 51-55, F
I love the lightening bugs.
NoxAeterna · 41-45, M
I love watching my dog chase them.
itsok · 31-35, F
@NoxAeterna does your dog ever catch one? My nephew’s dog catches flies and moths
NoxAeterna · 41-45, M
@itsok Never managed to land himself a lightning bug. He did snag a dragonfly once though. It was….carnage to say the least.
