The days are getting shorter

You know what that means: we’re nearing the end of summer. I thought this wasn’t supposed to happen until September?! Man, I always hate this time of the year. 😞

It does happen! The daylight hours start to reduce on the day after the Summer Solstice.

The change is not linear. The rate of change starts very low, increases to its maximum in the Autumn, then slows to the Winter Solstice.

Then the same pattern in the opposite direction to the next Summer Solstice.

That's why we notice it particularly in September and October (in the Northern Hemisphere - opposite in the South).

(I have not seen it plotted and don't have the sunrise / sunset times for the year to plot myself, but I guess the rate of change is sinusoidal, hence being rapid around the Equinoxes and slow around the Solstices.)
