The days are getting shorter

You know what that means: we’re nearing the end of summer. I thought this wasn’t supposed to happen until September?! Man, I always hate this time of the year. 😞

It does happen! The daylight hours start to reduce on the day after the Summer Solstice.

The change is not linear. The rate of change starts very low, increases to its maximum in the Autumn, then slows to the Winter Solstice.

Then the same pattern in the opposite direction to the next Summer Solstice.

That's why we notice it particularly in September and October (in the Northern Hemisphere - opposite in the South).

(I have not seen it plotted and don't have the sunrise / sunset times for the year to plot myself, but I guess the rate of change is sinusoidal, hence being rapid around the Equinoxes and slow around the Solstices.)

Ugh we've hardly had summer this year 😫

Days are decreasing from 21 June to 21 December. Around 21 September, the rate of change is the largest. (The biggest "difference" between yesterday and tomorrow in day length).

It's autumn in the air here already so I kind of got through that phase. Nights are much colder. I appreciate that at least we have no mosquitoes anymore.

I actually like this sweet spot because I like astronomy. Gets dark early enough for me to enjoy the darkness more. But around November, it starts getting sad.

You must not work outside then. I hate summer and can't wait until the little bit of winter we do get.
@Eternity I work outside often.

i like this time of year, love the Autumn.
@ravenhill I get seasonal depression with the fall and winter.
