Lighthouse......how...do...they...work?

I've been doing a lot of thinking about this and can't figure it out.

When a ship sees the light from one, is it supposed to be a warning or is the light a guide for the ship to know it's on the right track to reach it's home?

@Wol62 A lighthouse will give different signals depending if there is danger or not. Lighthouses also used to give fake signals to pirates to make them crash

@Wol62 They used to be very basic with just a guy with a lamp. Now is a different matter of course
