I’m so sick of schools closing because of a light dusting of snow. Do they not understand parents still have to work?

Blame culture has made everyone so afraid of being sued that that won’t be sensible about these things.

School is not a free babysitter. Plan ahead and accordingly to have child care backup on hand for these instances.

How ?
Snow is random
I know we went to school unless it was 6"
I've seen my district closed for no snow
It's ridiculous
And my school taxes are outrageous

@pdockal People have sitters or family members for emergency child care.

Times are different from when we were kids. That’s just a fact. And, schools will make up this day later in the school year so your taxes are safe and sound.

Most people i know both mom & dad work
My mom would take off from work when we had snow days because sitters weren't available until i was old enough to be left @ home

My school taxes are out of control
Make it up ... I've never seen my district make any up (yes snow days are built into the schedule)
My district has had ½ days for the kids but he teachers get full day pay (not snow days)
I don't think the superintendent needs $ 350,000 salary and that many personal days off
You have no idea about waste within most districts
FlowersInHerHair · 51-55, F
@pdockal I’m we’ll aware of waste in school districts. As for teachers getting paid on snow days? Contrary to popular belief, they are the hardest working group while also being the lowest paid. The loss of a school day means having to adjust lesson plans, deal with pissy parents, and still work to educate the entitled brats while at home…grading, prepping, catching up on required professional development.

We will not agree and that’s fine. Just don’t assume that someone who disagrees with you is not informed.

No they aren't
I've got family members who are teachers in different school districts who say that most teachers are spoiled whiny and the perks of their contracts (yes they enjoy the perks) are over the top ... one family member was the union rep

And the administrators are even worse

I had some teachers shove their opinions down our throats instead of teaching especially history & current events

Who do you know that gets paid for only working 180 days a year ?
Have every holiday & summers off?
Make more money when they get more college credits ?
Tons of sick days ?
Tons of personal days ?
When they do extra curricular activities they get more pay ?????
Get paid sabbaticals ?????

School is not a free babysitter

Actually it is. De dacto. Getting a last minute babysitter is easier said than done.

@pdockal Yeah you are right. I happened to go to a public school toward the end of the school day. I watched the children leave the building and almost immediately afterwards all the teachers left as well. The only ones left were the janitor and me.
