Snow tires.

"it sure is fun spending $800 on snow tires" said nobody ever.

What necessities have you spent money on that you really would have done something fun with?

It's interesting that snow tires are a thing in some parts of the country and not others. Where I am it's cables or chains. It's actually a requirement. Waaaay less expensive. 800 bucks for products that break down is a money suck.

@Ynotisay They are illegal here because they destroy the road.

@JimboSaturn Yep. Some areas are like that. What's illegal where I am is salt on the roads. We use cinders.

@Ynotisay Salt is pretty bad.

@JimboSaturn Yeah. In a few ways. I lived in the upper northeast as a kid and remember how much car rust was a part of it.

@Ynotisay It's not good for the environment too. What they really need to do is plow more! I'm in the south of Canada now and they just throw a shit ton of salt everywhere

@JimboSaturn Agree. Plowing is what it's about. Out of curiosity, because my partner just got back from Ottawa (which she loved), how much snow do you guys see a year?
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@Ynotisay I grew up in Ottawa and moved to around Toronto in 2000. My area looks like about 120 cm for the last 11 years.

@JimboSaturn Thanks. And it kind of sucks. That's some snow, but not a crazy amount, yet you still need to put out the money for snow tires. I'm sure there's some geographical considerations but yeah...plowing and cinders is a good way to go.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@Ynotisay Ottawa had much better plowing than around here.

@Ynotisay Snow tires are also just good for cold weather. The rubber is more soft and viscous and don't get hard and slippery like all season tires.
