Over watering or poor drainage is usually the cause of gnats. If that's the case simply leave the top soil to go dry for as long as possible between watering and the problem will right itself they ain't attracted to dry topsoil so they don't lay larve or anything in it once they hatch in the soil they'll just bugger off or die. They only have life cycles of about a week so it's quite an easy one to solve if it's just an over wet soil issue.
