@AnnabelleLeigh Thank you.
PerfectionOfTheHeart · 46-50, F
@Sojournersoul Always wanted to run track so I have great admiration for those who were able to. As much as I loved running back in high school, trying it 30 years later makes my body laugh hysterically…and painfully…in like every joint.
AnnabelleLeigh · F
You're welcome. I used to run too but not as seriously as you. Just for exercise. @Sojournersoul
Piper · 61-69, F
A couple of no real 'big deal' kind of ones, that I can recall right off. In the 6th grade, I was awarded a copy of The Jungle Book, for being the only one the teacher concluded had actually read the book. This really bugged another student in the class, because I was the new kid at the time. She made that quite clear.
In the next year or two, in junior high, that same girl talked me into entering the school talent contest. This was possible only because she'd become my "bestest" friend. We were awarded Most Original...and I'm pretty sure I still have that certificate somewhere PROVING it! 😃

@Piper That's awesome. What did you do in the talent contest?
Piper · 61-69, F
@AnnabelleLeigh We did a half pantomime/skit sort of thing to this song:

As you can surely imagine, it was really, really goofy. It was something we'd amused ourselves no end doing, though, before she talked me into getting up in front an auditorium full of people and doing it. I was a very nervous "little space girl". 🙂

Yes, for volunteering, I used to babysit the kindergarten class on my lunch break in grade 6 & 7.
AnnabelleLeigh · F
@Jeephikelove Aww :) I did that too. They called it the service squad and we would watch them at lunch and sometime in the classroom.
NerdyPotato · M
I ended up in the top so many of the national biology olympiad.
AnnabelleLeigh · F
@NerdyPotato Very cool.
Frostcloud · F
i think i won a pencil once when they pulled my name out of a bucket for morning announcements. it had the names of everyone in the school
AnnabelleLeigh · F
@Frostcloud Aww :) how old were you ?
Frostcloud · F
@AnnabelleLeigh this must have been the 3rd or 4th grade
AnnabelleLeigh · F
@Frostcloud That's really cute. :)
Lol, my brother and I were talking about this after my mother passed because we found his bronze certificate for obtaining 25 team points in 5 years of middle school.
He smiled at it and said "Yeah, the only one I ever got" (There were a set of three - bronze was 25, silver 50 and gold 100). It's kind of sad, really, to think that the average child between the ages of 7 and 11 only get their academic efforts acknowledged between 25 and 30 times in five years... then, there's that one gifted child, who only has to sneeze in class and he gets rewarded for it. No one ever came close to Clive in my time at that school.

@HootyTheNightOwl I feel all kids are gifted in different ways and they should all be acknowledged for them.
@AnnabelleLeigh That's the reason why I'm against teacher led classroom rewards systems. I mean, it's not hard for the likes of Clive and Naomi (the high achiever in my class) to succeed - they're not the average child and they had every opportunity to be where they were. I spoke to Naomi once and asked her what I could do to make my projects more like hers??? Turned out that she had Internet at home. I'd left home before my mother ever had the Internet put in.
I know now that I would never have measured up to Naomi academically... I was the opposite end of the spectrum, being the special needs kid, but I put in more effort than she did - until I realised just how rigged the system was. The only time I got attention was when I was struggling the most and failing because they stuck the deaf, long sighted child at the back of the class - again. Naiomi??? She was right at the front, three desks to the right of the board.
For me, that says it all.

Well we had something like a spelling bee, but with math in grammar school. It was called the Math Olympics. I didn't win 1st place, but made I made it to 15 in the city finals.
I got my photograph in newspaper and was on television news for that one. That was a big deal for a little kid. Still have have the newspaper clipping in my mothers scrapbook.(may she still R.I.P.)
But I won awards for track & field in highschool.

Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
Band, Drama, Speech, National honor society, American Legion Award. Went to state in Band, Drama, and Speech.
Sucked at sports but tried cross country. Shins couldn't handle it. Might have some medal for participation in it.
I'm more proud of my son becoming an eagle scout though.
AnnabelleLeigh · F
@Tastyfrzz Nice.
Lilymoon · F
Spelling 🤪
AnnabelleLeigh · F
@Lilymoon Awesome. I did too.
BrewCityBarfly · M

@BrewCityBarfly Creative. Very cool.

AnnabelleLeigh · F
@Alyosha How did that go?
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M

justanotherone · 51-55, M
I got some books as award in front of the school at the end of the year.
And they sent me to Maths competitions.

@AnnabelleLeigh It seriously messed me up for life, if she had not done that I would have gone to that school and things would have been vastly different for me, my dream was to be an Astrophysicist like my idol, the late Professor Carl Sagan.
AnnabelleLeigh · F
@NativePortlander1970 I am very sorry. She sounds like she caused you a lot of distress.
